Five trims are available with the 2023 Sonata: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, N Line, and Limited. Under the hood of the first two is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 191 horsepower and 181 lb.-ft of torque). In the SEL Plus and Limited, you’ll find a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder mill (180 hp and 195 lb.-ft of torque). Both engines are teamed up with an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front-wheel drivetrain. If performance is your pleasure, the high-output Sonata N Line is the only trim that gets a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces a healthy 290 hp and 311 lb.-ft. of torque. Unlike the others, it’s affixed to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
Fuel economy estimates reported by the EPA state the SE pulls off 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. For the SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited, it’s estimated to be around 27 city/37 highway. The higher-powered N Line is understandably a bit thirstier, returning somewhere in the ballpark of 23 city/33 highway.
The SE’s standard equipment list consists of LED exterior lighting fixtures, heated side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, sound-absorbing windshield glass, manually adjustable front seats, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, and a 60/40-split folding rear seatback. The SEL is boosted with a hands-free trunk, sound-reducing glass on the front side windows, proximity entry, push-button ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated front seats with driver power adjustments. The SEL Convenience Package is available to deliver a panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a wireless phone charger, a second-row USB charging port, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Digital Key (Hyundai’s smartphone-based keyless entry/ignition system), and LED interior lighting. The SEL Plus comes with each of those options, plus black exterior accents, microfiber seat inserts, and aluminum sport pedals.
The fun-driving N Line adds ambient interior lighting and a handful of performance-oriented upgrades, such as a sport-tuned suspension, a dual exhaust system with quad outlets, a signature exterior appearance with a rear spoiler, and exclusive front sport seats with microfiber inserts. The Limited builds off the SEL Plus with enhanced LED headlights and taillights, leather upholstery, superior front seats with passenger power adjustments and driver’s position memory, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, and ambient interior lighting.
The Hyundai SmartSense assortment of advanced safety features is standard in the ’23 Sonata. It consists of forward collision-avoidance assist (with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction turning detection), automatic high beams, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, driver attention monitoring, safe exit warning, and rear occupant alert. The N Line and Limited add highway driving assist. The Limited is fully loaded, getting Remote Smart Parking Assist, reverse parking collision-avoidance assist, front and rear parking sensors, a live-feed blind-spot view monitor, and a surround-view monitor.
The centerpiece of the SE is a sleek 8-inch touchscreen that contains Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free, and a six-speaker audio system. The SEL and remaining trims gain a 10.25-inch touchscreen with multi-device connection (up to two), navigation, dynamic voice recognition, and SiriusXM satellite radio. They’re compatible with Hyundai’s Bluelink connected car services as well. Music lovers, take note: the SEL Plus, N Line, and Limited trade the six-speaker audio unit for a premier 12-speaker Bose.
