Trims and Performance

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe is available in five trims: SE, SEL, XRT, Limited, and Calligraphy. The SE, SEL, and XRT each come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (191 hp and 181 lb.-ft. of torque) paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Limited and Calligraphy get a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 281 hp and 311 lb.-ft. of torque and works with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard across the board, but most New England drivers will prefer the optional all-wheel drivetrain.

According to the EPA, the FWD SE, SEL, and XRT return an estimated 25 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway; with AWD, they achieve 22 city/25 highway. The FWD Limited and Calligraphy achieve 22 city/28 highway, but with AWD, they lose an iota, dipping to 21 city/28 highway. As far as towing, the SE, SEL, and XRT can tow up to 2,000 pounds. For the Limited and Calligraphy, the towing max is 3,500 lb.

Hyundai sets up the SE with attractive features such as LED headlights and daytime running lights, wireless smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), dual front and rear USB ports, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, and a modern infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, HD radio, and Bluetooth hands-free phone/audio streaming. Rear privacy glass and a hidden storage compartment will help you keep valuables safe when you need to leave them in the vehicle, and the 60/40-split folding second-row seatback provides versatility for carrying oversized items.

The SmartSense safety technology suite is standard as well. It contains forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian/cyclist and junction turning detection, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, rear occupant alert, safe exit assist, and driver attention monitoring.

A hands-free liftgate, roof rails, heated side mirrors, and heated front seats highlight the list of additions to the SEL. It also gets push-button ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, wireless phone charging, automatic climate control (two-zone), and Hyundai Digital Key, which lets you use your smartphone to lock, unlock, and start the Santa Fe. The SEL’s multimedia system introduces a 10.25-inch touchscreen, which isn’t compatible with wireless smartphone integration, and so that reverts to the plug-in variety. This system gets some excellent additional features, though: navigation, dynamic voice recognition, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The safety suite grows significantly with Highway Driving Assist (Hyundai’s semi hands-free driving system), an enhanced rear occupant alert system, and navigation-based adaptive cruise control with curve control.

The available Premium Package will add a panoramic sunroof, sound-reducing front glass, LED taillights, sleek chrome accents, a live-feed blind-spot view monitor, and a surround-view camera system. The interior updates of this package consist of simulated-leather upholstery, a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, power-release second-row seats, a 12.3-inch digital multi-information display, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, manual second-row sunshades, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and LED lights. The XRT gets the same equipment as the SEL, but with a black-accented exterior, trim-specific side moldings, and the faux-leather seats listed in the SEL’s optional Premium Package.

Limited and Calligraphy

The Limited echoes the amenities of the fully optioned SEL, but with upgraded projector-type LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding side mirrors, real leather upholstery, a driver’s seat with position memory and a leg cushion extender, a heated steering wheel, and a HomeLink universal transponder. The seats are ventilated in the first row and heated in the second row, and Safety Sense adds front and rear parking sensors and Remote Smart Parking Assist. The Calligraphy tops the range with a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, quilted Nappa leather upholstery, a head-up display, and unique interior accent lighting.
