The Hyundai Tucson has always been popular, but now its fans have another version to choose from: the all-new Tucson Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). It has all of the charms of the other Tucsons (the conventional gas-burning one and the gas-electric hybrid), but with the versatility of running on all electric power for more than 30 miles. For eco-conscious folks who don’t have a long commute, it’s the ideal way to limit consumption of fossil fuels without having to plan travel around recharging. Adding to its many charms, it’s spacious and can pull a small trailer with a total weight of up to 2,000 pounds. The Tucson PHEV also gets America’s Best Warranty, providing 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain protection (including the hybrid battery). Another great perk is 3 years of free scheduled maintenance (oil changes and tire rotations) and 5 years of round-the-clock roadside assistance.

The lower-priced of the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid trims supplies a fine array of standard features. The most noteworthy among them are heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, LED headlights with automatic on/off, heated outside mirrors with their own turn-signal indicators, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar control, Hyundai’s Proximity Key. It also has stain-resistant cloth seats, push-button start, a tilt steering wheel, 19-inch alloy wheels, noise-reducing and solar-controlling glass on the windshield and front side mirrors, and rear privacy glass. For added utility, the back seat splits 60/40 and folds down to make space for larger items through the rear cargo area.

The SEL gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Bluetooth (for hands-free phone and audio streaming), and SiriusXM satellite radio. Each row has a pair of USB ports. A subscription for 3 years of BlueLink telematics service (for vehicle diagnostics and help during emergencies) is included as well. The driver-assist technologies included via Hyundai SmartSense are forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, driver attention warning, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot collision avoidance assist, lane following assist, lane-keeping assist, rear occupant alert, and safe exit warning.

The Limited trim gets loaded up with quite a few luxuries and convenient features. For instance, the front seats are both heated and ventilated, and the back seats are heated. The driver will also enjoy a heated steering wheel. Other amenities of note are the panoramic moonroof, hands-free power liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, projector-style LED headlights, upgraded front and rear fascias, eight-way power front passenger seat, and LED interior lighting.

The infotainment touchscreen increases to 10.25 inches, but since this larger screen is not compatible with wireless smartphone integration, it reverts to the plug-in type. The other multimedia upgrades are a Bose sound system, wireless device charging, navigation, and voice recognition as an alternate control method. The Limited’s driver-assist roster is augmented with adaptive cruise control, parking distance warning, reverse parking collision-avoidance assist, a surround-view monitor, blind-spot view monitor, highway driving assist, ultrasonic rear occupant alert, and Remote Smart Park Assist (self-parking technology).
