The Santa Fe nameplate includes the long-popular conventional gas-only Santa Fe, now in its fourth generation, and the regular Santa Fe Hybrid, which was introduced in 2019.
This long-awaited PHEV can travel approximately 30 miles solely on electricity before the gasoline engine takes over. Trims, Powertrain, and Range
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV is a two-row crossover that’s offered in a pair of choices: the SEL Convenience and Limited trim levels. Their plug-in hybrid system – a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and a 66.9kW electric motor – provides a total system output of 261 hp. A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drivetrain round out the mechanical specs. The EPA has rated its fuel efficiency at 33 miles per gallon (combined), with an MPGe of 76. Both trims can tow up to 2,000 pounds and have a total electric driving range of 30 miles, although the vehicle’s regenerative braking function will add incrementally to that as it captures kinetic energy created from the stopping process.
Comfort and Convenience
The SEL Convenience comes with LED exterior lights, heated side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, rooftop rails, Digital Key (which lets you use your smartphone as the vehicle’s key fob), a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, push-button start, a wireless smartphone charger, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, and 60/40-split power-folding rear seats. The Limited upgrades its side mirrors with a power-folding feature and adds a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, LED interior lighting, and a 115-volt power outlet. The seating is taken up a notch as well, with leather upholstery, a cushion extender and position memory for the driver’s seat, a power front passenger’s seat, ventilated front seats, and heated rear outboard seats.
Technology and Safety
Hyundai packs the Santa Fe PHEV with standard active safety features via the SmartSense technology bundle. In the SEL Convenience, this includes blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, rear parking sensors, rear occupant alert, forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction turning detection, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning, safe exit assist, and lane following assist. The loaded Limited adds front parking sensors, remote smart parking assist, highway driving assist, a blind-spot view monitor, and a surround-view camera system.
For staying connected and informed, the SEL Convenience’s infotainment system has an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming. The Limited gets a larger touchscreen (10.25 inches), navigation, and a premium Harman Kardon sound system with 12 speakers. The smartphone integration with this upgraded system reverts to plug-in format, though, since wireless integration isn’t compatible with the larger screen.
