Thanks to the Hyundai Accent, the term “economy car” can be embraced rather than considered a stigma. The Korean automaker has always been about bang for the buck, and the 2022 Accent – which still carries a base MSRP below $17,000 – deserves a spotlight. This feature-packed four-door has the equipment and style of a vehicle in a higher price bracket. That’s especially true since it’s made even more valuable by its exceptional warranties, including 10 years/100,000 miles of powertrain protection, and complimentary three-year maintenance plan, which covers oil changes and tire rotations.

Now well into its fifth generation, the Accent has long been the answer for both first-time car buyers and people who simply would rather keep their automotive expenses under control and spend their dollars on something else. One change for the 2022 model year is that a manual transmission will no longer be offered (but the Intelligent Variable Transmission does have the SHIFTRONIC semi-manual mode).

Mechanical Basics and Fuel Efficiency

The front-wheel-drive 2022 Hyundai Accent is a subcompact four-door sedan known for its low cost of ownership, thanks to affordable pricing and exceptional fuel economy. Its three trim levels – SE, SEL, and Limited – are all rated by the EPA to return 33 miles per gallon around town and 41 mpg on the highway. The 1.6-liter four-cylinder Smartstream engine works with an IVT and offers automatic shifting by default and semi-manual shifting in SHIFTRONIC mode.

Standard Features by Trim Level

You wouldn’t expect the lowest-priced version of a subcompact car to have more than the essentials, but the Accent SE has a few surprises. While it has the expected cloth seats and requisite rearview camera, the latter is upgraded with dynamic guidelines for even more confidence in backing up – a great addition since this car is popular with brand-new drivers. Among the bonuses are power windows, power exterior mirrors, USB and MP3 ports, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. The SEL adds an auto-up feature to the driver’s-side window, plus fog lights, automatic headlights, two USB charge ports, heated exterior mirrors with a driver’s-side blind-spot mirror, and a storage console with sliding armrest. The Limited get the most, of course, with heated front seats, auto climate control, LED lighting (exterior), a hands-free trunk release, keyless entry with push-button ignition, and a new feature, an anti-theft engine immobilizer. Its exterior mirrors are also enhanced with integrated turn-signal indicators.

Technologies for Safety and Connectivity

Hyundai packs the ’22 Accent with lots of safety features, starting with antilock brakes, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a full complement of airbags. Forward collision-avoidance assist is standard on the Limited trim.

Two different levels of infotainment systems keep everyone informed and entertained. The SE has a 5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth (for hands-free phone use and audio streaming), and four speakers. The SEL and Limited move up to a 7-inch touchscreen and add voice recognition, smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), SiriusXM satellite radio, and another pair of speakers.
