2020 Hyundai Kona on Cape Cod

Overview

The subcompact crossover Hyundai Kona is made for navigating tight urban areas with the advantage of a little more utility than cars at the same price point. It also comes with a generous selection of desirable features, including active safety technology, and a higher-quality interior than its rivals offer. With the 2020 model, adaptive cruise control has been included for the highest trim, the Ultimate, and there have also been a few minor changes made to the standard and optional equipment across the board. This follow-up to the award-winning (2019 North American SUV of the Year) debut Kona model continues to provide stand-out value and versatility in a segment that seems to get more crowded with competition every day.

Trim Levels

There are five trim levels available with the '20 Kona: the SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, and Ultimate. The SE, SEL, and SEL Plus grades get a powertrain consisting of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (147 horsepower) mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Limited and Ultimate trims receive a more fun and powerful powertrain: a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine (175 hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque) with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard with all-wheel drive optional on all trims. The AWD versions get an improved rear suspension and a lockable center differential for the best handling in New England's sometimes challenging winter weather.

Comfort and Convenience

The base SE comes with alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, and a rearview camera system. The SEL gets a bit more to enjoy with roof rails, keyless entry and ignition, and heated front seats, while the SEL Plus comes standard with a sunroof and a power-adjustable driver's seat. The Limited adds LED headlights and taillights, automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Go for the top of the heap with the Ultimate and you'll get all of those features plus rear parking sensors.

Technology and Safety

The SE provides a 7-inch infotainment system outfitted with Bluetooth capability, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a six-speaker audio system. The SEL adds satellite radio, while the SEL Plus and Limited get a premium eight-speaker Infinity audio system and a wireless smartphone charging pad. The Ultimate rounds out the accommodations with a head-up display and infotainment upgrades in the form of an 8-inch touchscreen and integrated navigation.

All '20 Konas receive some active safety features as standard equipment. The SE gets forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist, and the SEL and SEL Plus both receive blind-spot monitoring, with the SEL Plus also getting Hyundai Blue Link communication services. The Ultimate adds pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and automatic windshield wipers.
