2019 Hyundai Sonata

The midsized sedan segment has become one of the most competitive markets today, and the 2019 Hyundai Sonata is back for another year of winning over buyers in that segment with its excellent standard features and America's Best Warranty. That warranty includes 10 years or 100,000 miles of limited powertrain coverage and 5 years (no mileage limitation) of 24-hour roadside assistance.

Trim Levels and Standard Equipment

Having gone through a mid-model year refreshment in 2018, the '19 Sonata is mostly a carryover, although some of the trim names have been adjusted (the + extension has been dropped from the Sport+ and Limited 2.0T+ trim names).

The '19 Sonata is available in SE, Eco, SEL, Sport, Limited, and Limited 2.0T trim levels. Some of the more impressive standard features on the base trim include a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, an infotainment system with a 7-inch screen, a USB port, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The next two trims, the SEL and Sport, come standard with a dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charger, and a heated steering wheel for comfort. The Limited offers active safety features like automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist, plus a trip computer. The most loaded trim, the Limited 2.0T, receives heated and ventilated leather front seats, rear parking sensors, and a panoramic sunroof.

The Sonata offers three different engines: a 185 horsepower base engine, a 178 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder Eco engine (Eco trim only), and a 245 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the last of which is only available with the Limited 2.0T trim level (hence its name[LM1] ). The Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid options (these are considered separate Sonata models, as opposed to trim levels) provide superior fuel economy.

The handling for the '19 Sonata is smooth, and the car does a great job of absorbing uneven pavement. The suspension is firm but not overly so, limiting body roll and providing the driver with more confidence in cornering.

Safety & Technology

For 2019, the Sonata received a perfect five-star overall crash test rating from the NHTSA. The standard safety features on all trims include blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change alert, a rearview camera, brake assist, front and rear crumple zones, and an energy-absorbing steering column. Available active-safety upgrades range from smart cruise control to headlights with Dynamic Bending Light technology.

With the hands-free phone systems becoming more of a necessity in every vehicle made today, it is worth mentioning that the voice control for the navigation and phone systems on the '19 Sonata is especially accurate and simple to use, allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road and avoid unnecessary distractions.
