2019 Hyundai Tucson

2019 Hyundai Tucson Cape Cod

Back after a refresh, the 2019 Hyundai Tucson brings with it additional active safety features, an updated engine lineup, and a new appearance for the fascia. Overall, this attractive crossover looks bolder and more modern, and it contains the technology and crash-mitigating features that today's buyer demands. It's also comfortable and adequately roomy: its 31 cubic feet of cargo space increases to 61.9 when the back seat is folded flat.

The refreshed engine lineup starts with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 161 horsepower; this one powers the two lowest trims. The other four trims get a more powerful four-cylinder, a 181 hp 2.4-liter. They both get paired to a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC, and idling start/stop is standard. Fuel economy on the '19 Tucson is good, as it achieves up to 24 city mpg and 28 highway mpg, depending on the trim level.

Trim Levels and Standard Equipment

The trim choices are the SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited, and Ultimate. The base SE has a nice list of standard equipment, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth with alternate controls on the steering wheel, start-stop technology for fuel economy, and some sophisticated active safety technology. The Value trim adds roof rails, Hyundai Blue Link technology, a blind spot monitor, push-button start, an eight-way power driver's seat, and heated front seats. If you upgrade to the SEL you will get rear air-conditioning vents, a second-row USB, and dual-zone auto climate control.

The Sport trim continues to add to the list of amenities with wireless device charging, 19-inch alloy wheels, an upgraded Infinity audio system with eight speakers, LED headlights and taillights, and a hands-free smart liftgate. Moving into the premium trims, the Limited gets leather seats, a heated steering wheel, a surround-view monitor, a power front passenger seat, and chrome exterior accents. At the top of the list, the Ultimate delivers on its name with integrated navigation with an 8-inch touchscreen, Smart Cruise Control, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, heated back seats, and pedestrian detection technology.

Technology and Safety Features

Hyundai already offers its American buyers the best warranty available in the country, but it sweetens the deal further by including more active safety features than ever in its base models. The lowest '19 Tucson trim comes with driver attention warning, forward collision avoidance assist, and lane keep assist, along with passive safety features such as a front crumple zone, airbags, and side impact reinforcements.

The infotainment system comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen and six speakers, but the upgrades come quickly as the trim level rises. All trims except the base receive three years of Hyundai's Blue Link Connected Car System, which provides maintenance reminders, diagnostic readings, automatic collision notification for emergency response, remote lock/unlock, enhanced roadside assistance, vehicle location service, and more.
